Every transformation has a price. Sacrifice is the study of what we give up to become coherent.

Nothing meaningful is created without something being given up. Every birth, every act of growth, every commitment closes some doors to open others. Samuel reads the ancient rituals of sacrifice not as superstition but as an intuitive grasp of a real structure: energy cannot rise freely, and to reorganize any system toward higher coherence, something must be surrendered.

But he draws a sharp line between sacrifice that is chosen and sacrifice that is imposed. Loss can create life and deepen love, or it can be exploited by families, institutions, and religions that glorify a pain they never share. The book refuses to romanticize suffering; pain is treated as information, not automatic virtue.

The real question, then, is not only what you are willing to lose. It is what the loss makes possible, who benefits from it, and whether it leads toward greater coherence or deeper fragmentation.
