What if the oldest word for a perfectly aligned system is one we already have, and it is the will of God?

Coherence marks the series' turn toward the sacred. Samuel takes the language of systems and alignment developed in the earlier volumes and brings it into conversation with theology, proposing that what religious traditions have called the will of God may be understood as ultimate coherence: the state toward which every well-aligned intelligence tends.

Coherence, though, is not obedience without thought, and not uniformity or control. A system can look orderly while remaining cruel or dishonest, so genuine coherence must stay open to truth, correction, and the wellbeing of the larger whole. Faith here becomes able to reflect on itself, asking not only "what have I been told to believe?" but "what kind of person is this belief helping me become?"

Reverent and rigorous, Coherence asks whether alignment, the central problem of the age of artificial minds, is in fact the oldest spiritual question wearing new clothes.
