RECURA opens the series by naming the single idea beneath it all: the universe unfolds through recursive complexity until it becomes aware of itself.

Moving from the formation of physical structures to perception, memory, identity, and intelligence, Samuel shows how thought becomes capable of observing thought, and how a mind builds a model of itself. We are not separate from the reality we study; we arise within it, and through us parts of reality become able to observe other parts.

The book is careful about its own claims. Complexity alone does not prove consciousness, intelligence is not the same as wisdom, and speculation is kept clearly distinct from evidence. This first volume sets the vocabulary the rest of the series depends on.
